Autism Diagnostic Testing

Psychological and developmental assessment

Psychological and developmental assessment

  • Diagnostic evaluations assess for Autism Spectrum Disorder, utilizing the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), and include an in-depth parent/caregiver interview and behavior rating scales, such as the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition (CARS2).

  • For some children, a virtual diagnostic evaluation, using the Tele-ASD-Peds (TAP) protocol via a secure telehealth platform, may be available.

  • Parents and caregivers may seek an autism diagnostic evaluation if there have been concerns about a child's social communication skills or repetitive/restricted patterns of behavior.  A diagnostic evaluation may also be recommended by your child's pediatrician, your child's current service providers, or following a previous evaluation, and is often needed to access specialized intervention services, such as applied behavior analysis (ABA).

  • Dr. Paula also provides cognitive, adaptive, and behavioral assessment of children aged 5 and under, including those with suspected intellectual and developmental delays, and behavioral challenges, including selective mutism, attention difficulties, and disruptive behavior.

  • A typical evaluation will include an individualized assessment of cognitive ability, along with an adaptive assessment and comprehensive behavioral rating scales, including teacher rating scales (if requested and applicable).

  • Families may request a psychological or developmental assessment when a child is failing to meet expected milestones or when there have been concerns about a child's behavior, either at home or in structured school settings.

  • Dr. Paula welcomes referrals for initial assessments, as well as those from families seeking a second opinion after a previous evaluation, and re-evaluations to assess progress and current functional level.

  • If you are concerned about autism AND this is your child's first evaluation, a full battery assessment (both psychological and diagnostic evaluations) is recommended.
