A private evaluation is just that. Private. Your child's evaluation results are strictly confidential and will be shared only with you. Once you receive the evaluation report, you can then share it with your child's doctor, health insurance company, service providers, or school district, but this action must come from you.
Families often pursue a private evaluation when they have had trouble receiving an assessment through other channels. Particularly when seeking an autism diagnostic assessment, a lack of available providers and procedural obstacles can lead to long delays. Autism diagnostic evaluations are "supplemental" assessments through county early intervention and preschool special education programs, meaning they are most often requested only after initial assessments have been completed. Too often, children fail to be referred for additional testing. Even when concerns are identified, further testing may not be approved, authorized, or performed in a timely manner.
A private assessment allows your child to be seen by a knowledgeable and experienced autism evaluator, with minimal wait time.
The earlier the child is diagnosed, the sooner they can access intervention services. For children with delays, especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, the impact of early identification and access to treatment services cannot be overstated. Research consistently demonstrates that children who begin services early have better outcomes in communication, socialization, and behavior, with long-term benefits that are evident for years to come.
